Hamilton Southeastern High School’s Gary Harris has been named the Indiana Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
The 6-5, 180-pound guard averaged 25.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.2 steals and 3.7 assists in leading the Royals to a 22-3 record. Harris, who has signed with Michigan State, will play in the McDonald’s All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic, and is ranked the 11th-best recruit in the country by ESPNU. Off the court, he has a 3.55 grade point average and volunteers for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and serves as a youth basketball coach and camp counselor.
“Gary Harris is an extremely unselfish play and he can do it all on the court,” HSE coach Brian Satterfield said in a press release. “The things he does on offense are well documented but what separates him is what he can do at the defensive end. He can play any position on the court.”
The award recognizes athletic and academic excellence, as well as character. Harris is a finalist for the national award, which will be announced later this month.
